Fedora 8, VMware Server and Windows XP

Unfortunately virtualization shipped with Fedora does not work for me. Because of that i gave a try to VMware Server. It runs clean and smooth and you do not need to boot special kernel for that. Only pros, no cons. Only one is the license of it (I have read somewhere that it might stop working after 30 days). I was wrong, version which i am describing is free for use (You just need to register for free to get a license number, link provided somewhere below). Now quick installation. Info is about how to install VMare Server 1.0.4 on Fedora 8.

Before downloading and installing it is better to make sure that you have a kernel-devel package that suits your kernel.

First what needs to be done is download package with server. As you prefer .tar.gz or .rpm. It is good thing to register your server to get serial number which we will need during configuration. You can register here, they do not send emails so you want to write down that number (I have not received any email though you could get one).

Next step is the installation. In case you downloaded .tar.gz you need to compile it, if you downloaded .rpm you only need to install it. When installation is done you configure app with vmware-config.pl. Scirpt will ask you a lot of questions. I suggest to confirm everything with enter, you can find suggestions in square brackets.

During configuration there might be some problems with modules compilation. In that case you need to install patch recommended by VMware in this article. You can download that patch directly from here. Patch installation consist in extracting and applying patch by running ./runme.pl. After that you can proceed with configuration.

If you reached that line it means that you can start VMware Server, you can do it when you type vmware in console. Window should pop up where you can install virtual machines. My first virtual machine was Win Xp, so i could remove my ntfs partition and still use my broker account.

Good luck.
